Tom is No Turkey

(also published at America's Victory '08)

Real Conservative leadership is hard to find these days, there is a flock of turkeys in our government. This Thanksgiving there are a few Conservative leaders you can thank for not abandoning real conservative values. Take for instance Senator Tom Coburn; he is sticking to his conservative roots. While the majority of America’s Senators are gobbling up our tax dollars and growing fat off of the backs of tax payers, Senator Coburn has made it his mission to stop the feeding frenzy. Tom is no turkey.

In 1994 Coburn ran for the House of Representatives narrowly beating his opponent in a district that had not elected a Republican since 1921. He was reelected two more times before leaving the House—after three terms as he promised—in 2001. During his House days Coburn had many disagreements with House Speaker Newt Ginrich. It was Coburn’s belief that House Republicans were moving further to the left and abandoning the conservative values like the Contract with America that lead Republicans to a major defeat over the Democrat controlled House in 1994.

Dr. Coburn returned to Oklahoma and continued his work as an obstetrician (choosing to deliver life instead of destroying it.) He wrote a book in 2003 titled Breach of Trust: How Washington Turns Outsiders Into Insiders. In 2004 Oklahoma conservatives drafted Coburn to run for the Senate. He won easily and has been living up to his conservative constituents’ expectations.

After the Republicans’ bitter defeat in the 2006 mid-term elections, Senator Coburn had this to say:

“This election does not show that voters have abandoned their belief in limited government; it shows that the Republican Party has abandoned them. In fact, these results represent the total failure of big government Republicanism.

“The Republican Party now has an opportunity to rediscover its identity as a party for limited government, free enterprise and individual responsibility. Most Americans still believe in these ideals, which reflect not merely the spirit of 1994 or the Reagan Revolution, but the vision of our founders. If Republicans present real ideas and solutions based on these principles we will do well in the future.

America’s Victory 2008 depends on a return to real conservative values and a dedication to removing the flock of big government Republicans that soil the halls of Washington. We must support candidates like Senator Tom Coburn in 2008. Turkeys belong on the Thanksgiving table not the House and Senate.
